Land Rover thefts on the rise: older models also remain vulnerable
Land Rovers and Range Rovers are not only popular with motorists; these vehicles also remain a favorite among car thieves. In the first six months of 2026, 47 Land Rovers were stolen in the Netherlands. This represents a 21% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
Notably, it is not just the newest and most expensive models that are targeted. Land Rovers that have been on the road for ten years or longer are also being stolen. Effective vehicle security therefore remains essential, even when an insurer no longer explicitly mandates additional security for an older vehicle.
Nearly two Land Rovers stolen per week
Figures from the ‘Zicht op Voertuigcriminaliteit’ dashboard of the VbV Foundation show that the number of thefts fluctuated significantly in the first half of 2026:
- January: 1 theft;
- February: 11 thefts;
- March: 9 thefts;
- April: 8 thefts;
- May: 8 thefts;
- June: 10 thefts.
In total, 47 Land Rovers were stolen during these six months. This equates to an average of nearly two vehicles per week.
Furthermore, less than half of the stolen Land Rovers are recovered. Rapid detection, localization, and professional follow-up can therefore make a significant difference.
Which models are stolen most often?
The theft statistics show that both recent and older models are at risk. The three most stolen Land Rover models in the first half of 2026 were:
Range Rover Sport
12 units of the Range Rover Sport from the production years September 2013 to September 2022 were stolen.
Range Rover
9 vehicles of the current generation Range Rover, produced since January 2022, were stolen.
Range Rover Evoque
6 units of the Range Rover Evoque from the production years September 2011 to February 2019 were stolen.
It is no coincidence that older models still appear in the statistics. Land Rovers often retain significant value, and individual parts are in high demand internationally. At the same time, an insurer’s security requirements may change as a vehicle ages or decreases in value. However, the risk of theft does not automatically disappear.
Why is factory-fitted security not always sufficient?
Modern cars come equipped with various security features as standard, such as an alarm system, electronic immobilizer, and sometimes a built-in location or connectivity system. While these systems form an important first layer of security, experienced criminals are familiar with the technology and are increasingly adept at manipulating or disabling vehicle systems.

Always consult the current policy conditions or contact the insurer to determine which security class is required for a specific vehicle.

Check the security of older Land Rovers as well

- whether the existing security system is still functioning correctly;
- whether the SCM certificate is still valid;
- whether the security still aligns with the policy conditions;
- whether modifications to the vehicle affect the certification;
- whether additional vehicle security is advisable, even if it is not mandatory.
Ultimately, an insurance requirement is a minimum requirement. The actual theft risk of the vehicle may provide reason to opt for additional protection.
